This is a research study. Please take time to read this consent form and decide whether or not you wish to participate. Research studies only include people who choose to take part – your participation is completely voluntary. Please discuss any questions you have about the study or about this form with the project staff before deciding to participate.
CONCISE SUMMARY We are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of collaboration between humans and generative AI, and gathering design insights and recommendations from experts in the fields of teamwork, human-AI teaming, and generative AI. Participation will take approximately 100-120 minutes.
INTRODUCTION We are interested in understanding how to design effective collaborative processes between humans and generative AI. To participate in this study, you must be 18 years of age or older.
DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURES If you agree to participate, you will do three tasks with different states of ChatGPT. After every task, you will be asked to fill in a worksheet with your outcome, in addition to surveys and engaging in an interview.
RISKS We do not expect any risks to arise in the experiment. If any discomfort arises, please feel free to withdraw from the experiment. If you would like to take a break at any time please feel free to ask the experimenter.
BENEFITS If you decide to participate in this study, there will be no direct benefit to you. However, it is hoped that the information gained in this study will benefit society by improving our understanding of collaborating with generative AI.
COSTS AND COMPENSATION You will not have any costs. We are offering $25 to student participants.
PARTICIPANT RIGHTS Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and you may refuse to participate or leave the study at any time. If you decide to not participate in the study or leave the study early, it will not result in any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. If you are a student or employee at Iowa State University, your status will not be affected by your decision to participate or not. This research study is not related to any ISU course or any course assignments, meaning your participation is not a course requirement. Your course grade and/or standing in ISU courses will not be influenced by your decision to participate or not. You can skip any questions that you do not wish to answer.

However, U.S. federal government regulatory agencies, auditing departments of Iowa State University, and the Institutional Review Board (a committee that reviews and approves human subject research studies) may inspect and/or copy your records for quality assurance and data analysis. These records may contain private information. Audio recordings will be collected throughout the experiment. The particular results of your participation in this study will not be directly linked to your personal identity. Your answers to the free-response questions will be scanned for any information that might possibly identify you, and that information will be removed so that all results data are de-identified. Your de-identified data may be shared with other researchers or used in future research without your additional consent. De-identified data may also be shared on a data repository such as Open Science Framework, for consideration for publication in journals with an Open Data requirement or recommendation
